Jazz and Steel Pans Report Cards Generic Comments
Please remember that your students are given their band mark based on 5 categories; Performing (which includes concerts), Creating (which includes in-class improvisation), Responding (which will include responding to listening assignments), Collaboration (based on in-class checklists and activities), and Theory and Skills (measured in sight-reading and planned solos). The rubric and outline can be found on the Assessments Page of this website. Details specific to your student are as follows;
- In terms of Concerts, if a student misses one, they will need to find a new way to perform to make sure they demonstrate their development.
- Each Jazz and Steel Ensemble will be performing in the Highwood Lions Music Festival, likely on March 21, 2018.
- In terms of Collaboration, if students do not make a consistent habit of attendance practices, it will likely impact their mark.
The TourDetails on the tour are to be announced, as we are trying to accommodate not only student schedules, but also adult schedules for those involved in the adult Steel Ensemble.

Practicing
Students should be practicing their instruments regularly at home. For Jazzers, a good practice session includes at least a couple minutes doing "8's and 6's", a scale in an interesting rhythm, a section of the music assigned to them or a section of music they know we'll be working on next class, and then a song of their choosing. For our students, a proper practice can range from 15-30 minutes, at least twice per week.
For Steel Pans, the best way to practice is on a touchscreen computer, tablet or iPad using the Steel Pan App that can be downloaded at http://www.digitalpanapp.com, or to schedule some time in the Band Room to practice their instruments. If using the app, practice should happen at least three times per week. If practicing in the Band Room, once per week will usually suffice.
